Domicile, Ruler, and Co-ruler: Who's the Master of the House?

Read time: ~ 3 min.

In astrology, you often hear phrases like «Venus rules Taurus» or «Mars is in its domicile». To a beginner, this sounds like a Latin incantation. But in reality, there is a very simple and logical system behind these terms.

The House Metaphor: Signs and Planets

Imagine that a Zodiac Sign is a house, an apartment, or a set on a theater stage. And a Planet is the actor or tenant who moves into that apartment.

Every planet in the zodiac circle has its own apartment (and sometimes two) where it is the rightful owner. This is a place where it feels most comfortable, where it can relax, wear its favorite slippers, and manifest its qualities 100%.

Such an apartment is called a Domicile, and the owner planet is the Ruler of that sign.

Why Did Co-rulers Appear? (A Bit of History)

Ancient astrologers worked only with the celestial bodies that could be seen with the naked eye. There were exactly seven: the Sun, the Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, and Saturn.

There were 12 Zodiac signs. How do you divide 12 apartments among 7 tenants?

  • The Sun and the Moon (like a king and queen) each received one residence: the Sun got Leo, and the Moon got Cancer.
  • The other five planets were given two houses each (day and night). For example, Mars ruled both fiery Aries and watery Scorpio.

The Telescope Revolution

Centuries passed, and optics advanced. Astronomers discovered Uranus, then Neptune, and later Pluto. Astrologers began studying the new planets and realized that their energies perfectly aligned with certain signs:

  • The rebellious Uranus fit perfectly into the freedom-loving Aquarius.
  • The mystical Neptune proved to be native to the deep Pisces.
  • The powerful Pluto became the lord of the transforming Scorpio.

What happened to the old owners? No one kicked them out! Saturn (Aquarius), Jupiter (Pisces), and Mars (Scorpio) simply handed over the keys to the new tenants, while they themselves remained as Co-rulers (or traditional rulers).

How to Use This in Practice?

In modern astrology (and in AstroGvido), we take both planets into account, but in different ways:

  1. The Main Ruler shows the primary psychological background of the sign, its main motivation and energy in the modern world.
  2. The Co-ruler is a hidden, more ancient layer. It is a «backup engine» that kicks in during stressful or deep subconscious situations.

For example, if you were born under the sign of Pisces, your main guide is Neptune (intuition, dreams, empathy). But your co-ruler, Jupiter, will always give you a drive for large-scale goals, philosophy, and mentorship.
